Noel, our founder and director, has been in public service and helping work since he was 16 years old, when he volunteered for a community integration project in Handsworth, Birmingham, his home town. He has always supported empowering positive change socially, politically, psychologically and is committed to supporting folk who are made vulnerable.
His journey into psychological therapies began as an undergraduate volunteering for Nightline, the student peer counseling service. He trained professionally ten years later and qualified in 1996 with a post graduate diploma in Dramatherapy . He became regulated with this, first with the Council for Professions Supplementary to medicine (CPSM) and later when this duty moved to the Health Professions Council (HPC) and then the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC).
Core to empowerment is supporting the public in saying when they think something has gone wrong and this duty lies with the HCPC in the case of Noel’s work. Complaints are an essential element in ensuring the public are protected and we maintain safe practice and Noel fully supports this process. In this case complaints about his practice are dealt with by the statutory regulator who have duties and powers to investigate to ensure public safety.
This philosophy though extends to all the work of the company he founded Mental Health Works Ltd and any staff who work for it. Open, honest, transparent practice welcoming and supporting challenges and complaints from the public. Never blocking but always seeking to empower growth and learning.
As part of this transparency, Noel has attached a recent decision by his regulator after a complaint from the public about his honesty in his marketing materials. The regulator found he had made mistakes which were rectified but met the ethical criteria of being honest and trustworthy in his communications with the public. This indicates exactly his approach and that of the company. Mistakes will and do happen and complaints and feedback help us rectify and improve. This is how the company can make amends.
